I need help deciding...

So I'm starting grad school in the Fall (yay! school supplies—albeit much less exciting school supplies with less colors). I'm going for a MA in English, Creative Writing at UC Davis. I need a new bag for school; I feel as if my old backpack simply won't cut it anymore. I need a bag that is going to last (because why spend half the amount for a nice-ish bag instead of buying THE bag that will last for many years), looks nice/more professional, and can accommodate my macbook pro, a slim notebook or two, a few small books (thank goodness no more textbooks), and most likely a ton of papers that need grading as I'll be a TA. There are a lot of great options that I have found, and any one of them would work, but not one is perfect. Each one has one aspect or another that I'm not crazy about, but I'm having a really hard time deciding. So, I thought maybe I could get some help—please, weigh in by adding your vote in a comment (click on the link "specs" below each picture to view more details about the bag)!
specs
(1) I love the color and capacity of this bag, but I hate the zippers on the front! All in all this is probably the best option, but I can't get over the zippers...

(2) I like the overall look of this bag, and it seems to have the carrying capacity that I need, but there are no customer reviews on Amazon (or anywhere that I can find) and I'm not sure how I feel about buying a product that hasn't been "vetted" by consumers.

(3) The thing that I'm not crazy about with this bag is the fact that the strap is nylon and not leather; other than that most everything else is fine. Plus, it's quite a lot cheaper than the other bags...

(4) This bag is just "meh" for me, but it would get the job done, is affordable, and would fit all I need to carry....again with the nylon strap, though!

(5) This bag looks pretty cool, has great carrying capacity, but a lot of the reviews mention a crazy chemical smell that takes weeks to wear off—worth it? Plus, it looks like it might be harder to carry around than the bags that have the dowel rod construction.

Ok, so those are my top five options. If anyone else has any suggestions, I'm open to hear!

  1. have you looked at fossil bags? i got a plain leather one for my birthday a couple years ago, and it has worn in beautifully! (though pricey i hear...)
